Do you set goals for yourself? What are your goals for the upcoming week? How about a month? 2 years from now? 5 years? Have you ever come across some of these questions?? I am sure you definitely did. You might have answered some of these questions to people around you by portraying the broad idea of what you want to do over the coming span of time. But deep inside your mind , you are aware that you haven’t clearly articulated it out as specific goals. Until you do this, you are not channeling your efforts properly.

Some may be confused about: What exactly do goals mean?

Goals are a representation of your inner desires, desires which motivate and inspire you to succeed in life. Setting your goals gives you clarity of ultimately what you want. If you don’t have a goal in life, you are spending your life running around and not achieving anything for yourself. You get the illusion that you are doing a lot of things, but they aren’t what you want. Thus, you end up wasting  a lot of your precious time and energy. Ask yourself three questions to see whether you are setting the right goals or not…..:

  • Are your goals too vague or not properly established?

Be specific!! Don’t define goals that are virtually impossible. Each and every person should know his/her limits and surely one should always try to expand those limits but this can’t be done by taking giant leaps. It should follow the block method; where you build small blocks today for a bigger building tomorrow.

  • Are your goals too grand to be achievable?

Short term and long-term planning has to be done. Set small goals that need to be achieved in a day or a week or a month. Set long terms goals for a year or more. But don’t just set any random goal without specifying the time limit for achieving that goal. This leads to confusion in what you should do on a particular day to achieve that goal, so you need to define tasks for each day keeping the greater goal in mind.

  • Are you surrounded and influenced by the right people?

You need to spend time with people who have achieved the same goal or are trying to achieve the same goal as you so that you get motivated to follow your dream and also have help from your fellow pursuers.

When you keep a firm goal in your mind it will direct and drive you forward to accomplish your dreams. On this journey to success, there will be many ups and downs. You may have to face many failures or rejections at some point of life but you should never lose faith in yourself. Focus on your goal and work as hard as you can. Naturally, there will be some problems that are bound to happen. But even then try to be optimistic, have patience and don’t lose hope. Always remember,

SUCCESS in life comes when you simply refuse to give up, with goals so strong that obstacles, failure and loss only act as motivation.

Once you have your goals start planning out, how are you going to achieve that goal? Having desire and passion to achieve your goal is essential but what comes with prime importance is a plan to fulfill your desires. Simply having a goal in mind will not get you to your destination.

A GOAL without a PLAN is just a WISH!

Always commit on paper what you plan to do to achieve your desired goal. Research by Stanford University has shown that when you have your goal planned out and have it written on paper then you have better chances of achieving that goal than not having written down or just committed to memory. Ending today’s conversation with a beautiful quote….

A goal setting plan creates a bridge between today’s dream and tomorrow’s reality.
